George and Marion Kerby played Robert Sterling and Anne Jeffreys were the fun loving ghosts to the much more conservative Cosmo Topper played by Leo G. Carroll. The clueless Cosmo's wife, Henrietta Topper, was played Lee Patrick. Also the Kerby's had a St. Bernard dog who died with them and was also a ghost to add even more amusement to the show.

Broadway playwright Stephen Sondheim wrote nineteen episodes for Topper's first season, half alone and half with George Oppenheimer. The show's producer was Bernard L. Schubert.

R.J. Reynolds Tobacco's Camel cigarettes was the show's sponsor. In TV syndication the Camel commercials/references were removed.
