They were both up for the part of Spider-man character Peter Parker (2002.) Heath Ledger turned down the part of Spider-man and Ethan Hawke got the part of Jake Hoyt in TRAINING DAY which Tobey Maguire was going to play (2001) and the rest is history. Sidenotes: Tobey Maguire who plays the high skyscraper swinging Spider-man is said to be afraid of heights. Maquire hurt his back while filming Seabiscuit(2003) and almost didn't do Spider-man 2 (2004); Jake Gyllenhaal was considered to replace him.
