Auto Clunker Program / Economic Ramble
I just heard on CNBC that the government is saying that the program is still okay. The last thing they want to do is to cause people to be reluctant to visit auto dealerships this weekend. The Obama Administration is saying that the program is funded and not to worry.
Concern over the program running out of money came from Congressional Sources and not from the Obama Administration. Obama has been changing the rules in the middle of everything which has created all sorts of confusion. My take on it, it is pretty much like everything else in the economy, a potential mess.
I am glad that people have been able to take advantage of the program. That said, a problem with the Obama Economic Programs is a lot of money here, a lot of money there, but no concerted plan to deal with our trade deficits, unfair trading by trading partners, or to create meaningful mfg. jobs that are key for America to be able to create real wealth.
The money going to transit programs is considerable and yet not enough to actually build out a system that would add real value or wealth to our economy. His health care plan will do more to hurt the health care industry than to build out a system to serve a population. It destroys wealth. it doesn't create it. Obama is budgeting in a way that will not benefit our military mfg. jobs but will cost jobs and potentially weaken our military abilities.
The huge amount of money being put in the pipeline is creating economic numbers that while may seem to be a turning a point to hint the economy is pulling out of a recession, state tax numbers tell a different story. The shit load of money being spent is doing as much to stimulate the economies of our trading partners than the economies of the states that are the United States.
Without dealing with the trade deficit, Obama's stimulous plans are like him treating a patient by giving them a blood transfusion (pumping money into the patient) but without stopping the bleeding (our trade deficit.) So the economy, patient, is still bleeding to death. I am not talking about starting some trade war. I am not talking about protectionism. I am talking about dealing with trade imbalances. Either China and other nations we run trade deficits with start importing more of our products or we have no choice but to put quotas in place to import fewer products from them. It is not about a trade war, it is about sanity. Budget deficits are on paper. Trade deficits are a real transfer of wealth and at this point it is wealth we no longer have. Household budget deficits are on paper so long as they can keep borrowing money. When they can no longer borrow money because they have ruined their credit, living under that bridge is real.

I did not link to article on auto clunker program because the information was already outdated. A lot of the information on the clunker program is like the program itself, hard to figure out.
